Inspired by her West African heritage, and her son Cosmo, Leena Similu’s fine art practice explores matriarchy, power-femininity and fertility under the moniker Yaya Situation. For spring, Similu has created a capsule range of collectible ceramic sculptures, each available in a limited edtion of 10, signed and dated by the artist. Though she is currently focused on sculptural work, Similu got her start in fashion, working in London with designers Stella McCartney and Jil Sander before launching her own line Les Chiffoniers, and eventually making her way to clay. “I discovered ceramics when I was pregnant with my son three years ago and thinking about origins, and the heritage I could pass on to him,” the Los Angeles-based British transplant says. The artist recently exhibited at Laloma Projects in Pasadena and will present a solo exhibition at Fourteen30 Contemporary this summer.
